Your ‘physical copy’ of GTA 6 could expire before you even play it
The debate surrounding the “physical” edition of GTA 6 is back in the spotlight. Rockstar has confirmed on its official site that the PS5 download code included with physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI sold in Japan will expire 170 days after the game’s launch date of November 19, 2026. This means that players who don’t redeem the code before around May 8, 2027 will only get an empty game box, even if they buy a physical copy. The company said the policy was necessary due to regional regulations in Japan.
Why only Japan?
According to Rockstar’s updated support page as first spotted by Power Unlimited’ Genki columnist, the 170-day redemption window only applies to Japanese PS5 product codes. Xbox players are not affected as Xbox download codes are not region locked in the same way, and no similar restrictions have been announced for other countries. Rockstar also recommends purchasing the game from a retailer in the same region as the PlayStation account that will be used to redeem the code.
While Rockstar only cites “regional regulations,” some reports point to Japanese regulations around prepaid digital instruments, which can impose additional compliance requirements on codes that remain in effect for six months or more. A 170-day validity period keeps the code below that threshold.
Another reminder that physical games aren’t always physical anymore
This news reignited criticism surrounding GTA 6’s physical release, which did not actually include a game disc. Instead, each boxed copy contains a download code that allows players to preload the game starting November 12, ahead of its official launch on November 19.
For most players who purchased the game at launch, expiration is unlikely to be an issue. However, this raises concerns for collectors, gift buyers, or anyone who picks up a sealed copy months later from a store shelf. More broadly, this is another example of how the industry’s shift towards digital distribution is changing what it really means to “own” a physical game. Boxed copies may still look appropriate, but increasingly, what’s inside is just time-sensitive code and not a disc that’s built to last.

By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.
The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
